چکیده

Due to concerns over particle generation in conventional metal-on-polyethylene hip bearings used in total hip arthroplasty (THA), interest in advanced low-wear bearing alternatives such as ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) couples has reemerged. While ceramics demonstrate excellent compressive strength, the brittle nature of the material reduces tensile strength, possibly leading to catastrophic fracture when loads exceed material limits. Impingement between the femoral neck and acetabular liner gives rise to areas of extreme transient stress concentration, which have been clinically linked to fracture. This work presents methodology for the investigation of 3D ceramic fracture initiation/propagation using Abaqus’ co-simulation and extended finite element modeling (XFEM) capability. An anatomically realistic and physically validated FE model of a THA-implanted hip joint was developed, which employs physiologically accurate hip joint soft tissue capsule utilizing Abaqus’ built-in Holzapfel-Gasser-Ogden Anisotropic Hyperelastic material model. Given the complex contact and non-linear material behavior of the capsule during large rotational displacement of the implant, the use of Abaqus’ co-simulation allows for seamless Abaqus/Explicit analysis of soft-tissue and Abaqus/Standard analysis of hardware interaction and fracture mechanics. The use of XFEM has proven to be a valuable technique to investigate crack initiation and propagation, phenomena which have been tedious or impossible to adequately explore using conventional finite element fracture mechanics. The utilization of these Abaqus capabilities allows for a quantitative assessment of surgicaland patient-specific factors which predispose ceramic hip liners for catastrophic failure.

Influence of the diameter and the material type on the contact pressure in the acetabular component of a total hip prosthesis

The hip joint is often affected by diseases that lead to its failure and consequent need of replacement by an artificial joint. In this case, the total hip arthroplasty is the most common medical procedure to substitute the natural joint. The total hip prostheses are available on a wide range of sizes and materials. In this work, it is develop a computational model to compute the contact pressu...

Predicting Low Cycle Fatigue Life through Simulation of Crack in Cover Plate Welded Beam to Column Connections

This paper presents a low cycle fatigue life curve by simulating a crack in a cover plate welded moment connection. Initiation of ductile fracture in steel is controlled by growth and coalescence of micro-voids. This research used a numerical method using finite element modeling and simulation of ductile crack initiation by a micromechanical model. Therefore, a finite element model of a cover p...

Ceramic Head Fracture in Ceramic-on-Polyethylene Total Hip Arthroplasty

Revision rates of total hip arthroplasty have decreased after introducing total hip arthroplasty (THA) using ceramic component, since ceramic components could reduce components wear and osteolysis. The fracture of a ceramic component is a rare but potentially serious event. Thus, ceramic on polyethylene articulation is gradually spotlighted to reduce ceramic component fracture. There are a few ...

Metallosis after Exchange of the Femoral Head and Liner following Ceramic Acetabular Liner Dissociation in Total Hip Arthroplasty with a Modular Layered Acetabular Component

The type of bearing material that should be used in revision surgery after the failure of ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains controversial. In the case of ceramic fracture, the residual ceramic particles can cause consequent metallosis when metal implants are used for revision THA. On the other hand, in the case of THA failure without ceramic fracture, revision THA with a m...

A late dissociation of the ceramic component of a sandwich liner cup in a total hip arthroplasty—Case report and review of the literature

We present a case of a 71-year-old woman with unexplained instability of her total hip arthroplasty 12 years after implantation due to loosening of the ceramic component of a sandwich ceramic in polyethylene liner. She experienced in total 2 dislocations in 6 months. These events occurred without fracture of the ceramic liner. Sandwich ceramic liners were introduced with the idea of combining t...
